🍃 gem 🍃 Night
🍃 reason 🍃 While Gobo, like most Fraggles, is a creature of light and love, he is also a creature of darkness. Not of evil, but of dark. The shadows of tunnels and the hidden world beneath rocks in the dirt. That period between "blowing out the candle" and "eyes adjusting" where the world is unknown. The quiet in the night, that feeling of being the only person in the world when you're up late wandering. Gobo Fraggle is a creature of darkness, of the sort that's the mysterious tunnel in front of you just full of the promise of adventure.

🍃 personality 🍃 Gobo is pragmatism personified, barring impulsive or simple-minded (though not stupid) traits generally attributed to the Fraggle species. He likes to take a logical approach to life, going through it via map rather than via intuition, and is often the "straight man" to some of his friends' more wild schemes and activities. He disbelieves in luck, and though he does believe in magic, he takes even a thoughtful approach to that; the right magic for the right problem, rather than that it all happens by chance or whim. Occasionally this will put him at odds with the superstitious types, but it usually works out in the end.

Because of his pragmatism, he can often see the best way to solve a problem, and this has earned him respect from many Fraggles, not just his immediate friends group. ...Most Fraggles, honestly. His friends see him as their leader but so does the Rock, to a point; he's known as a great explorer and the nephew(/great-nephew) of other Fraggle explorers, outlier jobs for Fraggles themselves, and all the braver for it. As such others will hang onto his word or follow him and his advice; Gobo at worst is bemused by this attention, though he does have his moments otherwise...

On that note, Gobo of course has his negative traits as well. He's prideful, stubborn, and can be something of an insensitive jerk, though rarely maliciously; he just doesn't always realize his words or actions are going to hurt. Over the course of the series he broke through some of that (heck this song is from the same episode as the one I linked above), though he does tend to still get too much into what he wants to do without considering others. He has a HUGE competitive streak and can sometimes be a sore loser, and on his worst days can be dark, moody, or extremely argumentative.

More than anything else though, even what was just said, Gobo is good. This is a trait inherent to Fraggles, sure; even the series itself has evil repulsed by their mere presence. But Gobo himself has it in spades. He's more than nice, he's plain kind, and will reach out to anyone he thinks is hurting. He has a deep well of experience he can draw off of, and even if his advice is misguided or not needed, he's always there for support. There is, after all, a reason he's seen as a leader: he is experienced enough to know what to do, and intelligent enough to know when others can do it on their own.

🍃 background 🍃 Wiki

Gobo grew up in Fraggle Rock, an underground cavern system of happiness, music, and magic, populated by.. well, Fraggles. He was raised by his Uncle Matt (no word of what happened to his parents), who is an explorer in the vein of his uncle and Gobo's namesake. Though young Gobo at first wanted to be a juggler, eventually he too would fall into the role of explorer, and has since made it his life's purpose. Somewhere along the way he picked up four other close friends- Mokey, Wembley, Boober, and Red -and though Gobo would have other friends in basically the rest of the Rock's population whether he wanted that or not, it was those four he'd pal around with the most.

Once Uncle Matt discovered Outer Space- aka our world -Gobo would take on the role of leader among his friends again, not entirely his choosing; this will be a theme with him and begin a series of adventures. Though his uncle had "raised him right" in giving him lots of knowledge of Fraggle Rock and how to take care of himself and others, many, many of Gobo's adventures would go awry. There was an ill-fated attempt at creating a School for Explorers that wound up getting him and another trapped; the time he got caught in dynamite crossfire; once he froze the entire Rock and everyone in it; another time he caused an avalanche from a mislabeled magic spell...

Despite any "failings" though, Gobo is an accomplished explorer, respected in the Rock for his talents and sought out for for his level-headedness. He's led many events (some by chance, some by choosing be it his own or another's) that have shaped Fraggle Rock- writing the Glory Song, the tune to stand for his cycle/generation, comes to mind -and would ultimately make one of the most important contacts ever: Meeting a Silly Creature, the Fragglish term for humans.

Though Gobo was not the first Fraggle to meet a human period- that would most likely be his Uncle Matt in the aforementioned travels -Gobo's meeting wound up being special anyway. It would ultimately teach him that we are all connected. That even when your friends are apart you are together, for we're all a part of each other, and that everything is magic if you see it that way.

Gobo's ultimate takeaway from this is unknown (as that was the final episode of the series and all supplemental material has been placed prior to that) but that episode, and many instances in episodes prior, have all teased that Gobo would eventually decide to travel Outer Space too, just like Uncle Matt. Destiny is what you make of it, and at the end of it all...

You Cannot Leave the Magic.

🍃 timeline 🍃 Post-series

🍃 abilities/powers 🍃 -Tunnel generation: Fraggles in general seem to have a passive ability to create tunnels and pathways around them to exactly where they Need To Go. This has been shown several times in the series but is generally attributed to Fraggle Rock itself among them, until the end of the series confronted Fraggles with their latent magic firsthand
-Music: Music's a way of life for Fraggles, so much so they seem to have an almost psychic way of sharing it with others, with surrounding creatures able to pick up the song even if they've never heard it before. It's a force in their lives, for good or for ill, and is practically a Fraggle's birthright
-Dream Sharing: Fraggles who fall asleep with their heads touching are able to share dreams and interact with each others' subconscious space. There's also a wider connected dream network that ALL sleeping Fraggles can experience, and one of the books has even demonstrated they have a nightmare alarm in case said space turns dangerous. It's unknown if they can do this with non-Fraggles (but this RPer generally assumes that to be the case)
-General Exploration Skills: Other than the above Gobo has no outright magical abilities, but he is a capable individual in the vein of exploration, and has many skills related to it; packing, travelling, map-reading/-writing, trail knowledge, and the like

Gobo blinked his eyes open and looked around him rather quickly. He'd just been going down the tunnels of Fraggle Rock, on his way to the Great Hall- and now he was here. Wherever here was. It looked like a tree, but one that would dwarf even the mountainous Gorgs, and that shone with an interior light that the sun itself seemed to pale against. Strange noises caught his attention and he looked up and around, seeing flittering beings in all shapes. At first he thought of Ditzies, the lightbringers of Fraggle Rock, but these were bigger and seemed more like Silly Creatures with wings than anything else. Mystified he looked ahead, or was called around he couldn't really tell, and saw the Gems.

Two of them, glistening where they seemed to have grown. He approached and studied them each in turn, one to one side, one to the other. The yellow was inviting, reminding him of some of his trips down at the Rock, like the golden shimmery Crystal Caverns. But the other, the blue, seemed... familiar. It seemed almost like the Rock itself, and it was that one he walked toward, hardly hesitating before he put his hands on it. His breath caught as he felt magic ping through him, overtaking him; it hurt only a moment before he briefly lost himself in the glow. Stepping back, he shook his head clear in the passing feeling, and noticed two things: one, that he now held part of the crystal in his hands and two, that he now had wings. Wings! A quartet of spotted caramel wings he could spread if he concentrated enough.

He thought he should be scared. Fraggles weren't meant to fly! Stories from Wembley about doing just that aside. But as he closed his fingers around the gem and looked up and around him, he realized he wasn't alone in this. As he watched some seemed less practiced with their wings than others, be they fuzzy like his or more light-based. They must be newly arrived too. His fear melted away, replaced by an explorer's curiosity. Could he fly? Could he go up there?

Determined to do just that, Gobo set to practicing. The first few attempts... weren't the best. While discovering the pack had proven a good distraction from a rising temper against falling over and over, overall he mostly stuck to trying to fly. It was a slightly battered and bruised Fraggle that finally managed to lift off the ground and stay that way. But realizing he had done it, he was flying! Well it left him with an elation that lifted higher as he did with the wings. Looking up, he "dug in" and started going higher, and higher, and higher- Gotta see just what this tree has to it!
